Restorative Dentistry in Pearland: Crowning Achievements

Restorative Dentistry in Pearland

Today’s post looks at one of the miracles of this century, restorative dentistry in Pearland. Let’s pretend you are a biomedical engineer working in the field of dentistry before the conception of dental restorations. The men and women of your generation who have missing or damaged teeth want to repair or replace them with a man-made substitute. You have been hired to find or create a material that can be used to construct fillings, crowns, and dental bridges.

Requirements for Dental Restorations

Consider the physical and chemical requirements of this incredible material. It must sustain forces of 162 pounds per square inch (PSI), hundreds of times a day – day after day, year after year. It must be resistant to cracking and chipping. But there’s a catch regarding its strength; it must not damage the enamel on opposing teeth. This material must also maintain its size and shape and be resistant to shrinking.

It must be bondable to living tooth structure as well as other materials necessary for specific appliances. It must be biocompatible with the soft tissues in the mouth as well as tooth enamel, dentin, and bone. It can’t generate allergic reactions in the wearers. It must be corrosion-resistant to the chemicals in saliva, foods, and beverages. It must resist infection regardless of ever-present bacteria in the mouth. And it can’t contain toxic chemicals that could be absorbed into the bloodstream. And we haven’t even considered the aesthetics yet. Ideally, this amazing material would look identical to genuine teeth in color, opacity, and translucence.

Modern Restorative Dentistry in Pearland

Of course, we know that such an item exists because dental restorations have been around for a long time. Nowadays, there are numerous materials used alone or in combination including porcelain, ceramic, gold, and silver amalgam. Though the metals are exceptionally strong and malleable, they don’t meet some patient’s aesthetic requirements and are used mainly for back teeth. It is interesting to note that porcelain, one of the ideal materials used in modern restorations, was developed over 2000 years ago in China.

5 Simple Ways To Avoid A Cracked Tooth in Pearland

Cracked tooth in Pearland

A cracked tooth in Pearland can be painful, unattractive, and pricey to repair. Today’s post in the David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates – Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry dental blog contains an easy-to-follow list of tips to keep your teeth strong. If you are suffering from a cracked tooth in Pearland, please visit our office so we can treat it right away.

1. We Hate to State the Obvious, But Don’t Chew on Hard Food

Mind-blowing, right? People should steer clear of ice, hard candies, hard nuts, popcorn, and beef jerky. Also be careful with pitted fruits—that peach may be soft but if you bite hard into the pit, you could damage a tooth.

2. Protect Your Teeth While Engaging in Any Physical Activity

This rule should definitely take precedence when you’re playing a sport where you could be hit in the mouth. If you enjoy pick-up basketball games, indoor soccer leagues, rec center flag football, and many other activities, you should be using a well-fitting mouth guard.

3. Don’t Use Your Teeth as a Tool

Take a minute to find a pair of scissors before you tear open a package of lunch meat or rip the price tag off a new piece of clothing with your teeth. Use a nutcracker for nuts. A quality dental crown can cost hundreds of dollars.

4. Don’t Grind Your Teeth

Most people know that grinding your teeth is harmful, but did you know that it can lead to a cracked tooth? Furthermore, most people don’t know that their headaches or jaw pain could be caused by their teeth grinding. If you know or suspect that you are a tooth grinder, speak with your dentist so you can address the problem with stress reduction techniques or a mouth guard.

5. Lastly, Make Sure You Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Your dentist can alert you to conditions that might predispose you to cracked teeth, such as having an uneven chewing surface or brittle teeth. Your dentist may also discover tiny cracks you aren’t aware of. These cracks can then be repaired before further damage or decay occurs.

If you already have a cracked tooth, never fear! Treatment is available for all cracks, small and large. Veneers, cosmetic dental bonding, inlays/onlays, fillings, and dental implants are all used to repair or replace damaged teeth.

What’s The Difference Between An Inlay And An Onlay?

tooth colored fillings Pearland

If you have tooth sensitivity or pain when you chew with your back teeth, the surfaces may be damaged. One option for restoration is the use of an inlay or onlay made of metal, composite resin, or porcelain.

Inlays are very strong and shaped to precisely fit a hole in a damaged tooth. The choice of an inlay or onlay depends on how much decay and tooth loss has taken place.

An inlay resembles a filling and fills a small part of the tooth, while an onlay covers one or more of the cusps on the top of the tooth. In other words, an inlay fills a hole without changing the shape of the tooth, while an onlay builds up the tooth surface to restore its initial dimension.

The procedure begins with a thorough evaluation, oral x-ray, and an impression. The damaged area will be removed and then the inlay or onlay will be formed to exactly fit your tooth and bite. While it is being made, your tooth will have a temporary restoration piece to cover and safeguard the vulnerable area.

Finally, the inlay or onlay will be placed and permanently bonded to the tooth. Since the procedure requires removal of damaged tooth material, restoration fabrication at the lab, and the placement on the tooth, it will take a few appointments to perform the process.

Inlays and onlays safeguard the tooth from further weakening, provide natural function, and are durable and inconspicuous.

Restoring Teeth At David C. Montz DDS, Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry

Tooth Restoration in Pearland At David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates – Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry in Pearland, we use a variety of techniques to restore damaged teeth. Most Houston dental patients are familiar with fillings. Traditional fillings are also called ‘direct restorations‘ because they are applied to the tooth and then shaped and polished in one visit.

Another type of filling is called an ‘indirect restoration’ and is fabricated in a dental lab. There are two types: inlays and onlays.

When a tooth needs more extensive dental restoration, a crown is often used. We create strong, natural-looking crowns from a variety of materials.

What if the tooth is damaged beyond repair? There are a number of functional replacements for missing teeth. Dentures are not the only option.

Call 832-895-5120 to learn about the restoration options available. We have been improving smiles for Houston and Manvel patients since 1997.

Live Better With Dental Implants In Pearland

Pearland Implant Dentistry Ill-fitting dentures can cause more problems for Houston denture wearers than they solve. If you live with loose dentures, you probably regard them as a necessary evil. Though they certainly look better than a toothless mouth, in practical terms they leave much to be desired because they affect two essential activities: eating and talking.

Unfortunately, many frustrated Friendswood denture wearers have quit dining in restaurants or engaging in social activities because they are afraid their dentures will slip.

Implant dental procedures are allowing former denture wearers to re-engage in life.

Consider the advantages of implant anchored dentures:

  • They are stable because the implant is anchored in the bone.
  • Your denture is fixed, it will not move around in your mouth.
  • They prevent bone loss that can occur when teeth are removed.
  • They eliminate the necessity of regular denture relines.
  • They do not irritate gums.
  • No denture adhesive is required.

Alvin patients who have replaced their traditional dentures with implant overdentures enthusiastically say that the dental implant cost was more than worth it.

Do you want to eat normally again? What is the value of maintaining your facial shape? Can you put a price on confidence?

If you want more information about dental implants, call 832-895-5120 to schedule a consultation with David C. Montz. David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates – Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry is located at 2443 S Galveston Ave

Dental Implants In Houston

Cosmetic Dentistry The best permanent tooth replacement treatment available to Pearland people who are missing teeth are cutting-edge dental implants.

A dental implant is a metal (usually titanium) rod implanted into the bone to replace the missing root. The crown and supporting structure are securely and permanently attached to the rod. Titanium is amazingly strong and extremely well tolerated by the human body. There are very few instances of rejection. In fact, many Houston implant dentists are not familiar with any such cases.

Tooth implants offer a long-term solution to tooth loss. Are you a good candidate for tooth implant surgery?

Because the metal rod is anchored into the jaw bone, it is important that you have enough healthy bone at the implant site. Dr. David C. Montz can determine if you do. Age is rarely a factor. Dental implants have proved to be successful for Alvin people of all ages.

There are a few medical issues that may affect your eligibility for implants. These include diabetes, osteoporosis, radiation therapy for cancer, parathyroid disorders, bone disorders and leukemia. The presence of one or more of these conditions does not necessarily mean an implant cannot work for you; discuss any health problems with David C. Montz during your implant consultation.
